Flexible Labs for a Fast-Changing Field

The design was driven by the need to create a highly flexible laboratory environment that can evolve alongside the Department’s research priorities. Recognizing the fast-changing nature of bioengineering research, MOA emphasized adaptability in lab layouts, infrastructure, and circulation patterns to accommodate a wide range of equipment and experiments. The common incubator lab encourages cross-pollination of ideas and collaboration between researchers pursuing grants, while the prosthetics design studio supports innovation at the intersection of engineering and human health.

Innovation Starts With the Right Space

By thoughtfully balancing specialized and shared spaces, this project strengthens the Department of Bioengineering’s research capabilities and supports the university’s mission of advancing scientific discovery. Flexible laboratory layouts allow principal investigators to pivot quickly as research evolves, while collaborative incubator areas foster interaction and mentorship among researchers. The addition of the prosthetics design studio also enhances the department’s capacity for innovation, preparing students and faculty to contribute to cutting-edge advancements in biomedical engineering.
